Context Clues

To All of the WONDERFUL Teachers and Parents:

Are you looking for ways to help your students understand the meaning of various words?  Well, I am constantly searching for ways to help in this process.

After researching and analyzing various state tests, I found that explanation and inference types of context clues are used in most instances to aid in determining the meaning of unknown words.  So last school year, I developed context clue cards pertaining to the Common Core standards.  It includes Informational and Literary content.  I strategically developed mostly explanation and inference types of context clues.  I can actually say, it truly helped the students I work with across grade levels.

I chose Tier 2 words from each letter of the alphabet.  This  Common Core hands on activity will give your students a lot of practice with context clues.  Below are samples......

COMMON CORE STANDARDS ACCOUNTABILITY!

Well, this school year is approaching fast!  I've been very busy with my job as a Literacy Coach that I haven't had the time to post wonderful educational ideas.  I am so happy to finally have time to post again :)
I've been working rigorously on making sure I'm up to speed on the COMMON CORE STANDARDS! One thing I know for sure is that there is no easy way of learning the standards.  You must dive into each standard head first and learn/understand it one standard at a time.

The COMMON CORE STANDARDS are compiled into ONE ENORMOUS document.  I find it more feasible to break it down standard by standard.  Since the majority of us will take the COMMON CORE test in 2014, I am pretty sure your administrators will really look for some evidence of the COMMON CORE STANDARDS being implemented in your class this year.  Hanging the COMMON CORE STANDARDS in your classroom, and tagging the particular standard you are teaching that week will make sure you are covering what is expected on the upcoming test.  In addition, it will help your students understand the standard being taught that week.  When your students understand the goal each week, they will start to take more ownership of their learning.

Below, you will see sample posters of the COMMON CORE STANDARDS you could hang in your classroom.

Below are posters for K-5 COMMON CORE STANDARDS.  I love this because it will save us a lot of time looking up each standard for every lesson and it will help us use our time more efficiently!!  6-12 posters for  COMMON CORE STANDARDS are coming soon!

FACT AND OPINION

I've been teaching for over a decade and I'm now a Coach for Teachers as it relates to various subject areas.  In all of my years in education, I found FACT AND OPINION still remains to be a skill in which students have little familiarity.  I've analyzed data on several STATE ASSESSMENTS, and found students often times answer these particular questions incorrectly.  I feel students need more HANDS ON practice with this skill and they need more handy strategies for answering FACT AND OPINION questions.

Click on the link below for a Common Core aligned (out of the box) literacy center.....

Fact and Opinion (Common Core Aligned)

This is a wonder literacy unit. It includes 2 cookie mats, and multiple chocolate chip facts and opinions. Also, included are various extension sheets for your students to complete. This unit includes a nonfiction passage. According to the Common Core standards, students must have a lot of exposure to Nonfiction texts.
